Dallas Semiconductor Introduces World's First Multiport, T3/E3 ATM/Packet PHYs with Built-in Line Interface Units
DALLAS—(BUSINESS WIRE)—March 29, 2004—
Dallas Semiconductor (Nasdaq:MXIM) introduced the DS318x
family, the world's first multiport DS3/E3 ATM/packet PHYs with fully
integrated line interface units (LIUs). The family consists of the
DS3184 (quad), DS3183 (triple), DS3182 (dual), and DS3181 (single). By
providing a fully integrated DS3/E3 PHY including the LIU, the DS318x
family is a system-on-a-chip solution that minimizes design time,
component cost and board space. The DS3184 is 75 percent smaller,
consumes 32 percent less power, and costs 33 percent less than
existing DS3/E3 solutions.
Dallas Semiconductor is also introducing the DS316x family, a line
of multiport DS3/E3 ATM/Packet PHYs without LIUs. The family consists
of the DS3164 (quad), DS3163 (triple), DS3162 (dual), and DS3161
(single). For added design flexibility, the DS316x family is pin and
software compatible with the DS318x family.
All ports of the DS318x and DS316x families are independently
configurable for DS3, E3, or external framing protocols up to 52 Mbps.
The universal PHYs map ATM cells and/or HDLC packets into DS3 or E3
data streams. Direct mapping, PLCP and clear-channel cell mapping, and
direct and clear-channel packet mapping are supported. The devices
also support subrate (or fractional) DS3/E3 with internal circuitry
and special external interfaces.
System interface options include UTOPIA 2/3 and POS-PHY 2/3 with
8-, 16- or 32-bit bus width up to 66 MHz. The ports are independently
configurable for cell or packet traffic in POS-PHY bus modes. The
DS318x and DS316x devices also feature an integrated clock-rate
adapter to generate the required 44.736 MHz (DS3), 34.368 MHz (E3),
and/or 51.84 MHz from a single DS3, E3, or STS-1 input clock
frequency. Each port can be disabled to reduce power.
All eight DS318x and DS316x devices are pin and software
compatible for easy port-density migration on a single PCB design. The
ICs are available in a small, high-density, 27mm TE-CSBGA package. All
devices are offered in commercial (0 degrees Celsius to +70 degrees
Celsius) and extended (-40 degrees Celsius to +85 degrees Celsius)
operating ranges. Prices start at $220 for the DS3184 and $160 for the
DS3164 (1000-up, FOB USA). An evaluation kit is available to speed
designs. To find additional information on the DS318x family, visit
